The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for the Loudoun Campus. Seek shelter if necessary or hazardous conditions exist.

  • Locate and take shelter in hardened structure immediately.
  • Move to an interior room or hallway without windows on the lower floors of the building.
  • Stay away from large loose objects such as bookcases, cabinets, or shelves.
  • Do not use elevators or glass enclosed stairwells.
  • If you are outdoors and unable to reach a building return to your vehicle or find a low lying area and protect your head with your hands, bag, or other items.
  • Remain in the shelter area until the severe weather has passed.

Additional information about this weather event is available via weather radios, local TV stations, or on line at http://weather.gov. A tornado warning means that a severe thunderstorm capable of producing tornadoes is imminent or occurring.  NWS weather warnings span a large area; this weather warning does not mean that campus will be struck by a tornado, but there is a possibility that a tornado may occur on or near campus.  Take appropriate precautions based on your location, activities, and weather conditions.

Dear Patriots,

Mason Police is informing the campus community of a suspicious incident.

On Thursday, April 25th, at 1:12 PM, after departing the Fairfax Campus, the parent of a 17-year-old prospective student contacted Mason Police by phone to make an informal report of a suspicious incident that occurred approximately 20 minutes earlier inside the men’s restroom on the main level of the Johnson Center near Freshens.

The prospective student disclosed that while using the restroom, an unknown male suspect looked over the stall and made eye contact with the prospective student before entering the stall next to him. At this point, the unknown male suspect protruded both legs under the stall and used his legs to rub the prospective student’s legs. No words were exchanged during this event. The prospective student left the restroom without further incident.

The unknown male suspect was described as an older white male of average build with gold/white “light” colored short hair; no glasses, hat or facial hair; wearing a blue plaid dress style shirt tucked into light kaki colored slack style trousers; carrying a large brown brief case with a strap and a lanyard around his neck with an ID and Key.

Anyone with information pertaining to this incident can contact Mason Police at (703) 993-2810.

If a similar incident occurs in the future, Mason Police encourages members of the campus community to immediately call Mason Police at (703) 993-2810 or the anonymous tip line at (703) 993-4111 with a description of the suspect.

Mason Police also accepts anonymous crime tips online at https://police.gmu.edu/contact-us/submittip/ or through the RAVE Guardian mobile app.

Update on Suspicious Incident Reported March 20th, 2019

Latest Mason Alert

Dear Patriots,

On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, Mason Police informed the Mason community about an individual who had threatened harm to the University in a video posted on social media. At the time of the threats, the suspect was located in Morocco and was not an immediate or credible threat to the Mason community. However, because the suspect’s actions violated Virginia criminal law, Mason Police secured five felony warrants of arrest related to bomb threats against the University. Additionally, Mason Police worked with Interpol and several federal law enforcement agencies to track the suspect through several countries in the Middle East before he was ultimately arrested on the Virginia warrants while trying to enter Israel.

The suspect, Nassim Darwich, was extradited back to the US through JFK International Airport in New York City. Yesterday, Mason Police were in New York to take custody of Mr. Darwich and return him to Virginia. He is currently in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he is being held on $100,000.00 secured bond.

Mason Police would like to thank Interpol, the US Customs Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and the FBI/NY for assisting Mason Police with monitoring and arresting the suspect. We also appreciate the Mason community members who saw Darwich’s internet-based threats and acted to alert Mason Police. If anyone has any additional information about this case, please give the Mason Police Department a call at (703) 993-2810.

Thank You,

Mason Police

It has come to Mason Police’s attention that an individual tagged Mason Police in a video posted on social media threatening harm to the University. The individual’s threats toward the University are not credible at this time. The individual is currently located outside of the United States. Additionally, the individual is known by law enforcement to make false and irrational statements.

Mason Police will continue to investigate and monitor the situation, but there is no reason to believe the individual’s threats toward the University are credible at this time.

We appreciate and thank the community members who saw something and acted to alert Mason Police.
